The Solar System consists of the Sun and 8 Planets, including the Meteors, Asteroids, and Comets. The name "Solar System" means "Sun's Family". The center of the Solar System is the Sun.

The 8 Planets[]

There are 8 Planets in the Solar System. They are divide into 2 Groups called. Inner Planets (Terrestrial) and Outer Planets (Jovian).

Inner Planets:[]

Mercury - This is the 1st planet from the Solar System and the smallest planet in the Solar System. It is a dry planet. This planet has many craters making scientists believe that Meteors, or Asteroids create these craters. This planet was named after the fast-footed roman god messenger "Mercury". Mercury takes 88 earth days to revolve around the sun. This planet has no moons or satellites.

Venus - This is the 2nd planet from the Solar System and the 3rd smallest planet in the solar system. This is the hottest planet in the Solar System, due to Greenhouse effect. Venus is called the "Morning Star" and the "Evening Star", because Venus is visible in the morning and in the evening. Earth and Venus are called Twin Planets, because it has almost the same diameter. This planet was named after the roman goddess of beauty "Venus".

Earth - This is the 3rd planet from the Solar System and the 4th smallest planet in the solar system. This is the only living planet and the biggest among the Inner Planets. Because of normal temperature on Earth (15 degree celsius). Water can exist. Earth is covered in Water (75%) and Land (25%). It has only one moon called "Luna".

Mars - This is the 4th planet from the Solar System and the 2nd smallest planet in the solar system. Mars is called the red planet, because of it's color red. This color is due to the present of Iron Oxide. Mars is named after the roman god "Mars". Mars has 2 moons called "Phobos" and "Deimos".

Outer Planets:[]

Jupiter - This is the 5th planet from the Solar System and the biggest planet in the solar system. Jupiter is 317 times the mass of earth. Jupiter has a great storm called Great Red Spot. Jupiter has 67 moons and there are 4 known moons (Galilean Moons). They are "Io", "Europa", "Ganymede", and "Callisto". Jupiter is named after the roman god "Jupiter".

Saturn - This is the 6th planet from the Solar System and the 2nd biggest planet in the solar system. Saturn is named after the roman god "Saturn". Saturn is just over 95 times the mass of earth. The rings around Saturn are made up of ice particles, some debris, and some dust. Saturn has 62 moons and 9 known moons and they are "Mimas", "Enceladus", Tethys", "Dione", "Rhea", "Titan", "Hyperion", "Iapetus", and "Phoeboe".

Uranus - This is the 7th planet from the Solar System and the 3rd biggest planet in the solar system. Uranus is named after the roman god of the sky "Ouranus". It has 27 natural satellites revolving it and there are 6 known moons. They are "Puck", "Miranda", Ariel", "Umbriel", "Titania" and "Oberon". Uranus has a unique rotation. That is because it is tilted sideways compare to the other 7 planets. It has a bluish-green color, because the atmosphere of Uranus is very cold and cloudy.

Neptune - This is the 8th or last planet from the Solar System and the 4th biggest planet in the solar system. Neptune is named after the roman god of the sea "Neptune". Neptune is the densest planet in the solar system.

Other members of the Solar System[]

Dwarf Planets - There are tons of dwarf planet in the solar system and one of them is Pluto.

Asteroid Belt - This belt full of asteroids are located between Mars and Jupiter. Ceres is the most biggest asteroid in the asteroid belt.

Moons - Moons are also called "Satellites". These are small bodies that revolves around a bigger heavenly body (Examples are Planets). Like planets they also revolve around the sun.

Comets - They are dirty snowballs that come to earth once in many years. One example is the Halley Comet. They are formed in the Oort Cloud.

Meteors - They are also called "Shooting Stars". They are rocks that fall from outer space.

Asteroids - They are rocks located in the asteroid belt.
